NETWORK OPERATIONS CENTER (NOC)

Network operations center (NOC) represents a central location for controlling and managing computer networks. Some of the main tasks of a NOC include network control; monitoring, analysing and solving network problems; communication with end users and other NOCs - all that twenty four seven.

Srce has a long tradition (can anyone still remember a network of terminals connected to mainframe computers?) in maintaining computer networks for the needs of the scientific and educational (university) community in the Republic of Croatia.

In that period, the most important and probably most known role to the modern generation that Srce has had for the past 17 years (from 1992 until 2009) is the role of a network operations center of CARNet network. From that period we can mention three periods/phases that (technologically) have marked Srce NOC: initial phase of Internet in Croatia from 1991 until 1995 when CARNet was launched as a project, ATM phase of CARNet network from 1995 until 2003 and (Gigabit) Ethernet CARNet phase until 2009.

Currently, Srce performs NOC functions of the following computer networks/infrastructures:

  • computer-communication network of the University Campus Borongaj,
  • StuDOM infrastructure, computer-communication network of student
dormitories in the Republic of Croatia,
  • wireless  network of the University of Zagreb (UNIZG WLAN),
  • LAN, WLAN and VPN systems of the Rectorate  of the University of
    Zagreb,
  • Srce LAN, WLAN and VPN systems,
  • GÉANT 2 PoP hosting.

About GÉANT PoP at SRCE

The first international hub of the pan-European academic network GÉANT, has been established in SRCE in April 2002, by signing an Agreement on providing hosting to GÉANT PoP (Point of Presence) between SRCE and international organization DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network to Europe).

In february 2006 a new agreement was signed beetween SRCE and DANTE on providing hosting to GÉANT2 PoP, which is connected to the similar PoPs (Points of Presence) in Ljubljana and Budapest by optic connection. Therefore, the Croatian academic and research network CARNet increased the capacity of IP connection to the paneuropean network from 2.5Gbit/s to 10 Gbit/s. Additionally, through the same optic cable, the possibility of international gigabit connection for point-to-point service was introduced.
